What Is a Faux Neon Sign?

A faux neon sign — also called LED neon signs or fake neon signs — is an LED light sign that reproduces the glow of traditional glass neon without the glass tube, the gas or the high voltage. Ours is CNC-routed into an 8 mm acrylic panel and diffused with silicone, so the light reads as one smooth, dot-free line that photographs like glass neon but ships flat, installs in minutes and costs a fraction to run.

Faux Neon vs Glass Neon

The words get used loosely, so here is the distinction. Glass neon is a hand-bent glass tube filled with neon or argon gas, driven at 3–18 kV. Faux neon replaces the tube, gas and transformer with a low-voltage LED strip seated in a CNC-carved acrylic panel. The visual result is close; the operating cost, fragility and safety are not.

Two Kinds of Faux Neon

Not all faux neon is built the same way. Most consumer brands use LED neon flex — a hand-bent silicone tube with the LEDs inside, sold through Etsy-style stores. Ours is a different construction: a CNC-routed 8 mm acrylic panel with the LED strip seated in a machined groove. The acrylic method produces a flatter, crisper, more uniform line and keeps its shape over time, where flex tube can wave and sag.

Why Businesses Choose Faux Neon

  • No glass, no gas — nothing to shatter, leak or buzz; safe beside staff and customers.
  • Low voltage — 12–24 V DC via a Class 2 driver, no licensed electrician needed.
  • Far cheaper to run — a few watts per metre versus a high-voltage glass transformer.
  • Longer life — 50,000+ hour SMD 2835 LED versus ~10,000-hour gas tubes.
  • Brand-exact — your exact logo, font and Pantone colours, CNC-reproduced.

Construction & Materials

Every faux neon sign is built the same way: a blank 8 mm acrylic panel, a CNC-carved groove in the shape of your artwork, an SMD 2835 LED strip seated in the groove, and a silicone strip that both diffuses the light and seals the groove. The acrylic is cast PMMA, chosen because it stays clear and does not yellow.

LED Strip Selection Matrix

The light source is a bare SMD 2835 LED strip — the same chip class used in general lighting — selected by strip width, LED density and voltage to balance uniformity against power and cost.

Optical Engineering — The Dot-Free Look

The dot-free line that separates a professional faux neon sign from a cheap import is an optical decision, not a brightness decision. The silicone diffuser spreads each LED into an unbroken line; 120 LED/m with 8 mm spacing reads as a solid stroke, not a dotted one. This is what lets a faux neon sign photograph like glass neon on camera.

Colour & Control

Most faux neon signs need a single brand colour or a warm white. RGB adds the ability to change colour by season or campaign — but specify the tier before you order, because it changes the driver, the controller and the price.

Power, Drivers & Dimming

Faux neon signs run on a correctly sized constant-voltage driver that steps AC mains down to 12–24 V DC. Undersized drivers cause voltage drop — the far end of a long sign dims — so long runs are fed from 24 V with power injection points. We specify industrial drivers from Mean Well and similar UL-listed brands, and the driver pairs with a trailing-edge dimmer or RF/Wi-Fi controller for ambience control.

Faux Neon Mounting

Faux neon signs mount to windows, walls, ceilings and backlit faces. Window signs use clear acrylic or suction for a floating look; wall signs use stainless standoffs; ceiling signs hang from wire or chain; and backlit signs glow through a translucent face.

Applications

Faux neon signs are used for storefronts, restaurants and bars, retail, hotels and offices, and event and exhibition booths — anywhere a brand needs the neon look without glass neon’s cost and fragility.

Quality Control & Test Methodology

  • Ageing test — every sign burns in for 24 hours before packing to catch early LED or driver failure.
  • Uniformity check — visual + luminance inspection for hot spots and dotting.
  • Dimming test — driver and controller run through the full dimming range.
  • Electrical test — driver output, ground continuity and leakage current.

Certification & Compliance

Signs are built with CE- and RoHS-compliant components and UL-listed power supplies. Electric signs fall under UL 48; the RoHS Directive restricts hazardous substances, and the CE marking declares conformity for the EU market.

MOQ, Lead Time & Pricing Factors

Pricing is driven by size, colour tier, dimming and quantity — not by a fixed list. Single signs ship in 3–7 days; volume orders are tiered.

Production Process & Packaging

Artwork is CNC-routed into the acrylic, the LED strip is seated and sealed, and the sign is wired to its driver. Export orders ship in a plywood crate with foam cut-outs, with the driver and mounting kit packed separately.

Wholesale, OEM, Private Label & Dropship

For sign companies, distributors and Amazon sellers we run OEM and private-label programs: your branding on the box, your manuals, and direct-to-customer fulfilment. Reseller and agency pricing is quoted on volume — we do not publish a public wholesale list.

Supplier Evaluation Checklist

  • Is the LED chip and density named (SMD 2835, 60/120 per metre)?
  • Is the driver UL-listed, flicker-free and sized with headroom?
  • Are CE / RoHS / UL certificates available on request?
  • Is the acrylic UV-stable (cast PMMA, not extruded)?
  • Is dimming supported, and over which protocol?
  • Is MOQ, lead time and warranty written down?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a faux neon sign?

A faux neon sign (also called an LED neon sign or fake neon sign) is an LED light sign that reproduces the glow of traditional glass neon without the glass tube, gas or high voltage. Ours is CNC-routed into an 8 mm acrylic panel with an SMD 2835 LED strip and a silicone diffuser.

What is the difference between faux neon and glass neon?

Glass neon is a hand-bent glass tube filled with neon or argon gas and driven at 3-18 kV; it is bright but fragile, hot, and needs specialist installation. Faux neon replaces the tube and gas with a low-voltage (12-24 V DC) LED strip in a shatterproof acrylic panel, runs cool and silent, and lasts far longer.

Is faux neon as bright as real neon?

Yes. A dot-free 120 LED/m SMD 2835 strip behind a silicone diffuser reads as one smooth, bright line that photographs like glass neon, and it can be tuned brighter or dimmer with a dimmer or controller.

Are faux neon signs safe and low voltage?

Yes. Faux neon runs on 12-24 V DC through a Class 2 driver with AC 110-220 V input, so there is no glass, no gas, no heat and no high voltage at the sign — safe beside staff, customers and children.

Can you reproduce my exact logo and brand colours?

Yes. We CNC-reproduce your exact logo, font and letterforms from AI, DXF or PDF, and match Pantone brand colours in single colour, tunable-white CCT or RGB.

What is the MOQ, and do you support wholesale?

MOQ is 1 piece for a single sign, with tiered pricing from 5 sets and dedicated wholesale, reseller and OEM / private-label programs for sign companies and distributors.

Key Takeaways

  • Faux neon signs reproduce the glow of glass neon using an 8 mm acrylic panel, a CNC-carved groove, SMD 2835 LEDs and a silicone diffuser — no glass, gas or high voltage.
  • Shatterproof, cool, silent and low-voltage; 50,000+ hour LED life versus ~10,000-hour glass tubes.
  • Two faux constructions exist — CNC acrylic (ours) and hand-bent LED flex tube — and ours gives a flatter, crisper, dot-free line.
  • MOQ 1 piece; tiered and wholesale pricing from 5 sets; 3–7 day production, DHL/air/sea shipping worldwide.
