Material Engineering: 304, 316 & 201 Stainless Steel

Stainless steel resists corrosion through a self-healing chromium-oxide passivation layer — when the surface is scratched, chromium reacts with oxygen to re-form a protective film. That is why a 304 letter keeps its finish outdoors for decades while a plated or painted mild-steel letter rusts through in a few seasons. Choosing the right alloy is the single most important durability decision on a metal-letter order.

AlloyCommon nameCr / Ni contentCorrosion resistanceOutdoor / coastalBest use
304V2A (A2)18–20% Cr / 8–10.5% NiExcellent, generalIndoor + outdoor (standard)Default for most architectural lettering
316V4A (A4)16–18% Cr / 10–14% Ni + 2–3% MoSuperior (molybdenum vs. chloride)Coastal / marine (within ~50 mi of salt water)Seafront hotels, marinas, offshore signage
201—16–18% Cr / 3.5–5.5% Ni (high Mn)ModerateIndoor only (budget)Low-cost interior lettering where corrosion is not a risk

We default to 304 (AISI 304 / EN 1.4301) for metal letters. We recommend 316 (EN 1.4401) whenever the sign sits within roughly 50 miles of salt water, is exposed to de-icing salts, or faces industrial chlorides. For budget indoor projects we can quote 201, but we flag its lower nickel content and reduced corrosion resistance up front so there are no surprises in service.

Surface Finishes: Mirror (No.8), Brushed (No.4) & Hairline

The finish — not the metal — is what the eye reads first. Stainless steel finishes are defined by grit and measured by surface roughness (Ra). Lower Ra = smoother and more reflective. We control finish with a defined grit sequence and inspect every letter for grain direction and reflectivity before packing.

FinishGrit / processRoughness (Ra)LookFingerprint / scratchTypical use
No.8 MirrorSuccessive mechanical polish≤ 0.05 µmDistortion-free, chrome-like reflectivityShows fingerprints & micro-scratches readilyPremium lobbies, flagship façades, landmark branding
No.4 Brushed / Satin150–180 grit abrasive0.2–1.5 µmDirectional satin grain, low glareHides fingerprints well; wipe with the grainOffices, modern retail, corporate signage
HL HairlineContinuous fine-grit polish0.3–2.0 µmLong continuous hairline streaksVery fingerprint-resistantArchitectural façades, elevators, door frames

Finish data per the 304 stainless surface-finish reference from Huaxiao Metal; No.8 mirror achieves the lowest roughness (≤ 0.05 µm Ra) and is the most corrosion-resistant because polishing removes the crevices where contaminants lodge. Brushed grain can be oriented horizontally or vertically — tell us which, and we align it across every letter in a set.

Backlit (Halo) Metal Letters — Construction Engineering

A backlit metal letter is a hollow 304 stainless shell whose face stays solid and whose light is aimed backward, onto the wall. Inside the shell, an LED strip is mounted against a laser-cut acrylic back panel; light passes through the acrylic and reflects off the wall, drawing a soft halo around each letterform. By day the letters read as solid architectural metal; after dark the wall glows and the lettering stays legible from across a street — without the glare of an exposed-bulb sign.

  • Face: 304 stainless, mirror (No.8), brushed (No.4) or powder-coated finish
  • Back panel: laser-cut opal acrylic diffuser (translucent), sealed inside the shell
  • Light source: 12V DC LED strip, 5000–7000K white (warm white / RGB on request), 50,000-hour rating
  • Power: UL-listed Mean Well Class-2 supply, sized per letter run
  • Mounting: stud-mounted 10–20 mm off the wall so the reflected halo forms cleanly
  • Weathering: IP65 sealing, drainage weep holes, waterproof LED modules for outdoor installs

Supplier Evaluation Checklist (Procurement)

Use this 16-point checklist when vetting any metal-letter manufacturer — including us — to de-risk a signage procurement.

  1. Is the factory direct (no trading company), and can they show the production line?
  2. Do they certify the alloy (mill certs for 304/316) — not just claim “stainless”?
  3. Can they specify finish grade (No.8 / No.4 / HL) and Ra tolerance, not just “polished”?
  4. Do they passivate exterior letters (ASTM A967) and offer salt-spray data?
  5. Are LED modules branded (50,000-hr) and power supplies UL-listed (Mean Well or equivalent)?
  6. Is the backlit build IP65 with weep holes, or a dry-indoor-only design?
  7. Do they provide a 1:1 mounting template and wiring diagram with every order?
  8. Is MOQ and tiered pricing transparent, with no hidden tooling fees?
  9. What is the real lead time — including proof approval — for fabricated/backlit orders?
  10. Do they offer FOB/CIF/DDP and handle export packaging + insurance?
  11. Can they match brand colours (powder coat / PVD) with a Pantone/RAL reference?
  12. Do they show a documented QC gate (dimensional, finish, burn-in) or is it verbal?
  13. Is there a warranty, and what does it actually cover (LED, finish, structure)?
  14. Can they provide recent project references with photos for your vertical?
  15. How do they handle rework/returns on a defect, and who pays freight?
  16. Are they responsive (24-hr quote) and fluent in the required language?

Market Intelligence: Metal Letters in Architectural Signage

Dimensional metal lettering sits inside the architectural signage segment of a larger global signage market that was valued at USD 39.43 billion in 2026 and is projected to reach USD 60.06 billion by 2036 (4.3% CAGR), per Future Market Insights. Within the architectural-signage subsegment specifically, Market Reports World projects growth from USD 1,242.5 million in 2026 to USD 1,907.8 million by 2035 (4.41% CAGR).

Demand drivers: urbanisation and the premium retail / hospitality build-out cycle; brand owners upgrading from painted channel letters to longer-life metal lettering; and coastal and high-humidity markets shifting from aluminum and acrylic toward corrosion-resistant stainless steel. For B2B suppliers, the durable margin is in engineering-led customisation — documented finishes, backlighting and QC — not commodity pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What metal are your letters made from, and why 304 stainless steel?

Our standard is AISI 304 (EN 1.4301) stainless steel — 18–20% chromium and 8–10.5% nickel — which resists corrosion through a self-healing chromium-oxide passivation layer and keeps its finish outdoors for decades. For coastal or de-icing-salt exposure within roughly 50 miles of salt water we recommend 316 (EN 1.4401), which adds 2–3% molybdenum for superior chloride resistance.

What is the difference between mirror, brushed and hairline finish?

Mirror (No.8) is polished to a distortion-free reflective surface (≤ 0.05 µm Ra) — the premium lobby and façade look, but it shows fingerprints. Brushed (No.4) has a directional 150–180-grit satin grain that hides fingerprints and reads clean and modern. Hairline (HL) is a long continuous line finish that is the most fingerprint-resistant and is common on architectural façades.

What is a backlit (halo) metal letter and how is it built?

A backlit letter is a hollow 304 stainless shell with a solid face and an internal LED strip mounted against a laser-cut acrylic back panel. Light passes through the acrylic and reflects off the wall, drawing a soft halo around each letterform. It reads as solid metal by day and glows legibly at night, and is stud-mounted 10–20 mm off the wall.

Are your metal letters suitable for outdoor and coastal use?

Yes. 304 letters are rated for standard outdoor use, and we passivate exterior letters to ASTM A967 to restore the chromium-oxide layer after fabrication. For salt-water or high-chloride environments we specify 316, and for illuminated outdoor letters we build to IP65 with waterproof LED modules and drainage weep holes.

What is the minimum order quantity and lead time?

MOQ is 1 piece for samples and 10+ pieces for bulk with tiered pricing. Flat-cut letters ship in 3–7 working days after design approval; fabricated and backlit builds take 7–10 working days. Express shipping reaches most countries in 5–7 days, with air (~10 days) and sea (40–65 days) options and DDP available.

Can you match my brand font, logo and exact brand colours?

Yes. Send a vector file (AI / EPS / PDF / DXF) or choose a font and text, and we laser-cut to the exact letterform, spacing and kerning. For colour we offer powder coating to any RAL or Pantone reference and PVD finishes (gold, rose-gold, titanium) for a premium metallic brand look.

What certifications and QC do your metal letters carry?

Components and power supplies are UL 48 / CE / RoHS compliant, with ISO 9001 factory quality management and SGS reports on request. Every batch passes a documented QC gate — dimensional, finish/Ra, 24-hour LED burn-in, brightness uniformity and (for outdoor) IP65 waterproof checks.
