Custom Stainless Steel Letters
— 304 & 316 Steel Sign Letters, Brushed & Mirror, Factory-Direct
Factory-direct stainless steel letters — built-up hollow letters fabricated from 304 or 316 stainless steel in brushed or mirror finish. Three constructions: non-illuminated, halo backlit and front-lit. MOQ 1 piece, 7–14 day production.
What Are Stainless Steel Letters?
A stainless steel letter is a dimensional sign letter fabricated from stainless steel sheet — a built-up hollow body, not a flat cut-out. Each letter is a shell: the side returns are bent to the letterform, the front face is wrapped over the returns, and the two are welded and polished until the seams disappear. The result is a solid-looking metal letter with the corrosion resistance of 304 or 316 stainless steel.
Three Construction Types

| Type | How it is built | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Non-illuminated | Solid stainless face and returns, no light | Pure metal presence, day-lit identities |
| Halo backlit | Acrylic inlaid into the back, exposed 10 mm; LED throws a halo onto the wall | Premium brand walls, receptions |
| Front-lit | Acrylic face inlaid into the stainless shell, light through the face | Storefronts, retail, the “jelly letter” look |
How They’re Built

Every letter follows the same four-step fabrication: the side returns are bent first, following the letterform; the front face sheet is wrapped over the bent returns to enclose the sides; the face is welded to the returns; and the whole letter is polished so the weld seams become invisible. This is what separates a fabricated stainless letter from a flat laser-cut shape — it reads as one solid piece of metal.
Surface Finishes

Brushed (No. 4) is a fine satin linear grain — the most common finish, hides fingerprints and reads clean in daylight. Mirror (No. 8) is a highly reflective polish for banks, hotels and high-end retail. Hairline (HL) is a continuous fine-grit streak that resists fingerprints even further. For colour, we powder-coat to any RAL or Pantone reference and offer PVD gold, rose-gold and titanium metallic coatings. Every finish is applied after the weld-polish step, and a single project can mix finishes across letters.
| Finish / colour | Look | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| No. 8 Mirror | Chrome-like reflectivity | Banks, hotels, high-end retail |
| No. 4 Brushed | Satin directional grain | Storefronts, offices, corporate |
| HL Hairline | Fine continuous streaks | Architectural facades, elevators |
| Powder coat | Any RAL / Pantone, opaque | Brand-colour match, outdoor |
| PVD gold / rose-gold / titanium | Metallic vapour coating | Luxury, hospitality |
Material Grades: 304 vs 316

304 is the standard grade — excellent corrosion resistance for general outdoor and indoor signage, and the economical default. 316 adds 2–3% molybdenum (per British Stainless Steel Association guidance) to resist the chloride pitting that salt air causes, so it is specified for coastal, marine and high-salt-spray sites. The front face sheet is slightly thicker than the returns — typically 1.2 mm face and 1.0 mm returns, adjusted to your specification.
Halo Backlit Construction

The backlit variant inlays acrylic into the back of the stainless letter. The acrylic is exposed 10 mm out the back, and the stainless side is 20 mm or 30 mm deep. LED modules behind the acrylic throw light onto the wall, forming a soft halo in the exact shape of the letter — the finish most requested for corporate receptions and premium storefronts.

Applications

Stainless steel letters are specified for corporate lobbies and reception logo walls, storefronts and building facades, hotels and restaurants, retail and luxury brands, and coastal or outdoor sites where 316 grade is required.
Total Cost of Ownership
| Metric | Stainless steel | Aluminum | Acrylic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corrosion resistance | Excellent (316 for coastal) | Good | No metal - N/A |
| Outdoor life | 10+ years | 8-10 years | 5-8 years (UV dependent) |
| Perceived quality | Premium / permanent | Mid | Lower |
| Weight | Heavier | Lighter | Light |
| Relative cost | Higher | Mid | Lower |
Quality Control & Test Methodology
- Weld-seam inspection — every seam is ground and polished until invisible; checked by touch and against a light source.
- Salt-spray test — 316 coastal letters pass an ASTM B117 salt-spray exposure before release.
- Dimensional check — letters are measured against the approved vector artwork.
- Finish inspection — brush direction and mirror reflectivity are checked for consistency across the set.
- Burn-in (illuminated) — halo and front-lit letters burn in for 24 hours before packing.
Failure Modes & Prevention
| Failure mode | Cause | Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Tea staining (304 near coast) | Chloride exposure on 304 | Specify 316 for coastal sites |
| Weld pitting / seam visibility | Poor weld + finish | Grind and polish seams invisible |
| Fingerprint smudging (mirror) | High-reflectivity surface | Brushed finish or anti-fingerprint coating |
| LED failure (illuminated) | Driver / heat | SMD 2835 + 24 h burn-in |
| Galvanic corrosion | Mixed metals in contact | Isolate fasteners, matching hardware |
Certification & Compliance
Letters are built with CE- and RoHS-compliant components and UL-listed power supplies. Electric signs fall under UL 48; the RoHS Directive restricts hazardous substances, and the CE marking declares conformity for the EU market.

Supplier Evaluation Checklist
- Is the grade named (304 vs 316, per ASTM A240)?
- Are the weld seams polished invisible?
- Is the thickness specified (front face vs returns)?
- Is the finish matched to the environment (coastal → 316 + brushed or mirror)?
- Are CE / RoHS / UL certificates available on request?
- Is MOQ, lead time and warranty written down?
Frequently Asked Questions
Will stainless steel letters rust?
304 stainless resists corrosion well for most outdoor and indoor environments. For coastal, marine or high-salt-spray sites we specify 316, whose 2-3% molybdenum resists the chloride pitting that stains ordinary steel. Stainless is stain-resistant, not stain-proof – grade is chosen to match the environment.
What is the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel?
316 adds 2-3% molybdenum (per ASTM A240) on top of the standard 304 composition. That molybdenum is what resists chloride pitting from salt air, so 316 is used for coastal and marine sites. For general signage, 304 is the economical standard and performs excellently.
What finish and colour options do you offer?
Three metal finishes – No. 4 brushed (satin grain), No. 8 mirror (reflective polish) and HL hairline (fine continuous streaks) – plus colour in powder coat to any RAL or Pantone, and PVD gold, rose-gold and titanium. Every finish is applied after the weld-polish step, and a single set can mix finishes across letters.
Can stainless steel letters be illuminated?
Yes – two ways. Halo backlit letters inlay acrylic into the back (exposed 10 mm, stainless side 20-30 mm deep) so LED light forms a halo on the wall. Front-lit letters inlay an acrylic face into the stainless shell for a glowing face.
How are stainless steel letters mounted?
The standard is welded stud bolts on the back plus a paper template; your installer drills and secures with nuts. For indoor use we can supply adhesive or standoff mounting. The mounting method is confirmed with the wall type before production.
What is the MOQ and lead time?
MOQ is 1 piece. A single letter ships in 7-14 days, 5-100 sets in 7-14 days, and 100+ sets in 14-30 days. We provide a free vector proof from your artwork before production.
